Independence Day
More than just a day off work, Independence Day is celebrated on July 4 as the day when the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. From July 8, 1776, until the next month, the document was read publicly and people celebrated whenever they heard it. The next year, in Philadelphia, bells rang and ships fired guns, candles and firecrackers were lighted. But the War of Independence dragged on until 1783, and in that year, Independence Day was made an official holiday. 1941 Congress declared 4th of July a federal holiday.
However you celebrate the holiday, take time to remember our American forefathers for successfully working through strife, fears, and the bullies of their time to prevail in establishing the good ole US of A. Express thanks and jubilation on the 4th of July for this great country and help preserve the integrity and values that the Declaration of Independence was founded upon.
Club Festivities
Thanks to the many members who have stepped forward to help coordinate our club’s celebration of this important day. Here’s the line-up:
10:00 Parade – Meet at the corner of Tanglewood and Glen Forest at 10:00. Wear patriotic colors, bring your flags, noise makers, bikes, scooters, wagons, and strollers decorated in stars, stripes, streamers, etc. At 10:30, we’ll process through the neighborhood and end up at the pool for its opening at 11:00.
4:00 Games – Fun for all ages! Can you say greased watermelon?
5:30 Potluck- Bring a main dish and a side dish to share. Desserts and beverages will be provided along with paper products. Have items on the buffet by 5:15 so we can open the line promptly at 5:30.
Fireworks – Bring chairs and blankets and gather at York Elementary School in Brookhaven when the pool closes for fireworks fun. Bring your own sparklers and other fireworks along with a trash bag, broom and bucket of water if at all possible. Close supervision required of all shooters for everyone’s safey. Time will be allowed for everyone to have their fun then step back to a safe distance and oooohhh and aaahhh over the display of the bigger fireworks by our own pool pyros.
Thanks to the Reetz family for their annual run for the border (South Carolina ya’ll) to purchase the really cool pyrotechnics. There is a collection tin for contributions to offset the expense of these fireworks. Please be generous.
